Something New for Mother’s Day

Every year on the second Sunday of May, we celebrate the first lady in our lives…our Mothers!  The standard expressions of our love and appreciation usually involve flowers, a heartfelt card, her favorite sweet and a sit-down meal at her favorite restaurant.  Now those are all great, and I’m sure Mom loves it…every year.  Still, why not try something new this year?  Here are just a few ideas to help you start thinking outside the box for your Mother’s Day celebration:

BYOB Painting

You really don’t have to have an artistic bone in your body to enjoy this activity.  The instructor guides you through the entire experience as you sip on your favorite libation and groove to some good music.  The best part is art is subjective.  So, no matter how good or bad it looks, you’ll leave with a ready-to-hang painting that commemorates the day and memories to last a lifetime.

Some BYOB painting classes include Arts n Spirits, Bottle and Bottega and Colors and Bottles to name a few.

Craft A New Skill

Shake up mom’s routine and encourage her to learn something new.  Maybe she’s always wanted to learn another language, take the perfect picture or sip wine like a pro.  Whatever her hidden (or forgotten) goals are, help her achieve them by signing her up to learn more about them.  Or do one better and take the class with her!

Have no idea what to sign up for? has tons of great ideas and makes it easy to purchase packages.

Get Physical

Sign you and mom up for a 5K or a fun workout class like POUND with Saran Dunmore or anything active that you can do together.  You will not only be promoting a healthy lifestyle, but you will bond while you do it!  Plus afterwards you guys can always hit the spa for a relaxing massage or facial.  It’s the gift that keeps on giving!

Watch What Happens LIVE!

No, I’m not talking about the Bravo show (though it is quite entertaining).  I’m talking about catching a real live show.  Whether it’s a LOL comedy show or a gripping play, take mom to see it in Real-D!  Chicago is big on both live theater and comedy…many of the greats actually started right here in our city.  Check out the Black Ensemble Theater or Broadway in Chicago for plays or musicals.  Jokes and Notes or Second City for comedy/improv.

Want more options? is a hub for what’s on stage, or check out’s list of the best comedy clubs in the Chi to find some gut-busting laughs.

Whatever you decide to this year on Sunday, May 12th, I’m sure mom will love it (that’s just what they do).  But, try something new this year…you both might be pleasantly surprised!
